Rep. Sykes Announces $325,000 to Support Workforce Development

AKRON, OH – U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) announced the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded $325,000 to Asian Services in Action (ASIA) to support its Refugee Career Pathways Program.

“I am proud to welcome immigrants and their contributions to our community. This funding will help ensure that they are able to start and develop their careers in Ohio’s 13th Congressional District, thus helping establish their American Dream and bolster our local economy. I will continue fighting to bring funding back to our community to support workforce development,” said Rep. Sykes.

“As an organization that has been providing culturally and linguistically appropriate programming for immigrants and refugees for nearly thirty years, we are pleased to receive this grant which allows us to expand the services we provide to newcomers.  I am proud of my Social Services staff and development team for securing this award for our clients,” said Asian Services in Action Interim CEO Scott Piepho.

“Empowering refugees to build their future through meaningful careers is not just an investment in individuals, but a commitment to vibrant communities and a stronger society.” said Asian Services in Action Chief Program Officer Susan Wong.

ASIA is the largest health and human services agency serving the Asian American/Pacific Islander (AAPI) community of Northeast Ohio. ASIA runs two federally qualified health centers —one in Cleveland and one in Akron—that specialize in linguistically and culturally competent care for immigrants and refugees. ASIA also provides all of the wrap around social services for this community to thrive in Northeast Ohio.

The Refugee Career Pathways Program is designed to support refugees in successfully integrating into the workforce by providing tailored career development resources, training, and mentorship. Its mission is to empower individuals to build sustainable careers, fostering economic independence and contributing to their communities.
