TITLE: CONSTITUENT ADVOCATE
REPORTS TO: DISTRICT DIRECTOR
LOCATION: OHIO
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- to monitor and update the Member and District Director on district and local issues;
- to answer casework correspondence and verbal communications with constituents; and
- to act as liaison with federal, district, and local agencies for the Member and constituents.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- strong oral and written communication skills;
- knowledge of legislative process and of House organization and procedures;
- knowledge of all issues in the district in which the Member may need to take action;
- proficiency in word processing;
- strong telephone skills;
- thoroughness and careful attention to detail;
- skill in organizing and prioritizing work tasks and activities;
- ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment in fulfillment of casework responsibilities;
- availability to work atypical hours;
- ability to work well under pressure; and
- ability to work cooperatively and courteously with others.
DUTIES:
- acts as the grass roots representative for the Member within his or her area of responsibility including verbal communications with constituents and community stakeholders, and acting as liaison with federal, district, and local agencies;
- acts as liaison and interfaces with city, county, district, and federal officials, the chamber of commerce and other persons or groups to form effective relationships for the Member;
- handles all casework assignments;
- assesses casework for problems requiring legislative action and makes recommendations to the District Director;
- screens and refers cases, when appropriate, to other district offices;
- monitors scheduled district meetings for the Member with constituents;
- speaks to local groups when the Member is unavailable;
- maintains close communications with the Washington, DC, office;
- prepares regular reports for the District Director on issues in his or her assigned issue areas;
- continually screens active cases and acts as liaison with constituents to ensure that their cases are handled in a responsive manner;
- maintains up-to-date files on all cases and categories of information of importance to the office; and
- performs other duties as assigned.

- thoroughness and careful attention to detail;

- ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment in fulfillment of primary responsibilities;
- availability to work atypical hours;
- ability to work well under pressure; and
- ability to work cooperatively and courteously with others.
DUTIES:

TITLE: STAFF ASSISTANT
REPORTS TO: District Director
LOCATION: Ohio
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- to maintain and manage the front office operations of the District office; and
- to support the coordination of Congressional challenges and programming with other Member offices and Executive Departments;
- to act as liaison for the Member with the staff, public, and community stakeholders.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- at least two years of office experience;
- strong telephone skills;
- strong oral and written communication skills;
- ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment with respect to prioritization of and recommendations on Member appointments;
- proficiency in word processing and typing;
- strong organizational and filing skills;
- thoroughness and careful attention to detail;
- experience making travel reservations and arrangements;
- temperament to communicate with a variety of personalities in a tactful, pleasant, and professional manner;
- availability to work atypical hours;
- ability to work well under pressure; and
- ability to work cooperatively and courteously with others.
DUTIES:
- answers and screens telephone calls for the Member and other staff members and takes messages;
- greets and screens visitors;
- assists persons who have appointments with the Member or other staff members;
- maintains handout literature regarding the district and the House;
- signs for deliveries and forwards all materials delivered to the office to appropriate staff members in a timely manner;
- Maintains the inventory of office supplies;
- maintains the office answering machine or voicemail;
- ensures that requests for assistance are directed to the appropriate staff member in a timely manner;
- writes down visitor opinions, including full name, address, and all relevant information.;
- Prepares regular reports for the District Director on district activities in assigned issue areas;
- Assists the district staff to complete constituent casework and non-casework activities ? Oversees the district mail program;
- Manages the internship program;
- maintains important numbers, locations, and contact names for Member use;
- reviews the Member’s mail and invitations in a timely manner, in coordination with the District Director;
- responds to all invitations, either by written correspondence or by personal telephone call;
- maintains files of invitations that have been declined, accepted, or that are tentative or pending; and
- ensures that the Member is provided with briefing materials for each event
Community Support
- supports the District Director in staffing various events throughout the district, as needed;
- Coordinates with the District Director to delegate responsibilities;
- acts as a representative for the Member, including verbal communications with constituents and community stakeholders, and acting as liaison with federal, district, and local agencies; and
- performs other duties as assigned.
Green & Gold Congressional Aide
- Working as a constituent services representative;
- Helping local constituents resolve issues with federal agencies;
- Serving as liaison to local Veterans Service Organizations;
- Attending local events and meetings on behalf of the Member of Congress; and
- Performing legislative work.
SPECIFIC DUTIES FOR EACH OFFICE WILL BE DISCUSSED DURING THE INTERVIEW PROCESS. IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE YOU MUST BE A VETERAN, GOLD STAR FAMILY MEMBER, OR ACTIVE-DUTY SPOUSE AND MEET ALL THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS. NO WAIVERS WILL BE GRANTED:
- Honorably discharged;
- Released from active duty within the last six years;
- Pay grades at or below E-5/O-3/W-2;
- Veterans promoted to the pay grades of E-6/O-4/W-3 WITHIN 6-MONTHS OF SEPARATION from active duty may be eligible if they meet ALL other requirements
- Veterans who are in receipt of a 20-year or Temporary Early Retirement Authority (TERA) retirement are not eligible for the program.
- A surviving spouse, child/step-child, parent/step-parent, or sibling/step-sibling of a veteran who died:
- In the line of duty while serving in the Armed Forces; or
- from a service-connected disability.
- Must be the spouse of an Active-Duty service member. Active-Duty service members work for the military full-time and are subject to permanent change of station or permanent change of assignment orders upon completion of each tour of duty.
- Those subject to Title X mobilization are not eligible
Additional Requirements
Detail oriented; excellent organization skills; strong computer skills; ability to complete projects within timelines and under minimal supervision. Ability to work well under pressure and maintain a professional and courteous work disposition; ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment in handling sensitive information; ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. High School Diploma required. Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary.
