Rep. Sykes Announces Nearly $600,000 for Professional Job Training for 300 Unionized Workers

AKRON, OH – U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) announced the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Administration awarded $594,222 to the International Chemical Workers Union Council (ICWUC) in Akron to support professional instruction for approximately 300 HAZMAT employees.

“I am proud to bring back these federal funds, which will ensure our union workers have the resources and training they need to excel in their fields,” said Rep. Sykes. “Highly skilled and well-compensated workers are the backbone of American daily life, and this funding lives up to that standard. I will continue working to ensure the interests of local workers are recognized in Congress.”

“We are honored to receive the FY 2025 Hazardous Materials Inspector Training Grant, which affirms our commitment to advancing safety, preparedness, and professional excellence in hazardous materials oversight. This funding empowers us to deliver high-impact training that protects workers, communities, and the environment,” said Shari L. Glines-Allen, Director for the ICWUC Center for Worker Health and Safety Education.

These funds will help train instructors who can teach Department of Transportation material and conduct outreach training and evaluation for approximately 300 HAZMAT employees.
