CANTON, OHIO — On Friday, U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) presented an $850,000 ceremonial check to the City of Canton for the Cleveland Avenue NW Streetscape project and joined city officials for a ribbon cutting celebrating the completion of the E. Tuscarawas Streetscape project.

 

“Every Ohioan deserves to walk, bike, and drive safely in their own neighborhood,” said Rep. Sykes. “The Cleveland Avenue NW Streetscape project will make this busy corridor safer for pedestrians and families, and I'm thrilled to see the finished E. Tuscarawas Streetscape project already improving connectivity for the Canton community. I was proud to secure federal funding for both of these projects, and I thank Mayor Sherer and the City of Canton for their partnership in getting this work done.”

The Cleveland Avenue NW Streetscape project received $850,000 in Fiscal Year 2026 federal funding to improve the corridor between 12th and 15th Streets, an area that supports a retail district, residential neighborhoods, schools, medical facilities, and part of the route for the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Parade. The project will reduce the number of vehicle travel lanes to slow traffic, reconstruct sidewalks, add a five-foot safety buffer between sidewalks and the roadway, and plant landscaping trees to improve safety and aesthetics along the corridor.

The E. Tuscarawas Streetscape project received nearly $2.93 million in construction funding after Rep. Sykes secured $2.19 million in Fiscal Year 2024 Community Project Funding, signed into law by President Biden in March 2024. Completed in partnership with the Ohio Department of Transportation, the project added bike lanes, replaced curb ramps and sidewalks, and installed new decorative streetlights and landscaping along a quarter-mile stretch of State Route 172 to better connect downtown Canton to adjacent neighborhoods.

The $850,000 for the Cleveland Avenue NW Streetscape project is one of 15 Community Project Funding awards totaling more than $12 million that Rep. Sykes secured in the Fiscal Year 2026 federal budget for Ohio's 13th Congressional District. The other projects included in this funding can be found here.
