ICYMI: Rep. Sykes Joins Virtual Town Hall with Ohio Democratic Delegation to Answer Questions on Government Shutdown

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In Case You Missed It, U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) joined a Straight Talk on the Shutdown & Health Care Crossroads tele-town hall on Wednesday. Rep. Sykes, along with fellow Democratic Reps. Joyce Beatty (OH-03), Shontel Brown (OH-11), and Greg Landsman (OH-01) discussed the ongoing government shutdown and its critical connection to affordable health care. The delegation spoke to thousands of constituents and provided essential information related to the impacts of the shutdown being felt in Ohio’s 13th Congressional District, across the state and the country.

“My heart is with the hardworking people of my community, Ohio and the United States who are feeling the pain of this shutdown,” said Rep. Sykes. “Families are worried about putting food on the table, keeping their healthcare, and getting their next paycheck. This isn’t just a government shutdown; it’s a Republican-led healthcare crisis that didn’t have to happen. Instead of working with us to keep the government open and protect people’s access to care, House Republicans chose chaos over common sense. I’m ready to get back to work the moment they return to Washington because Ohio families deserve better than this.”

Congresswoman Sykes’ office remains open and ready to help. Those who need assistance with federal benefits or have questions about how this shutdown may affect them are encouraged to visit sykes.house.gov/shutdown or call her office at 330-400-5350.

Republicans in Washington control the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the White House. They have failed to put the needs of our country first, leading to this government shutdown. Their failure to extend ACA Premium Tax Credits means higher costs for families who rely on the Marketplace for coverage. In Ohio’s 13th Congressional District, 29,000 families will see their premiums rise by $720 on average. On top of that, cuts to Medicaid threaten critical care for seniors, children, and working families who depend on it most. Unfortunately, these cuts will hurt Ohio’s 13th District more than other communities as our local economy is heavily dependent on healthcare systems that rely on Medicaid and Medicare reimbursements to pay for our health care services.
