Rep. Sykes Visits CAK Airport to Support Federal Workers During Government Shutdown

AKRON, Ohio – Today, U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) visited the Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) to show her appreciation and support for federal employees continuing to serve the public during the ongoing government shutdown.

Despite the uncertainty and financial strain caused by the shutdown, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents and air traffic controllers at CAK are reporting to work without pay to keep travelers safe and flights operating smoothly. Congresswoman Sykes brought coffee and doughnuts to express her gratitude and remind these essential workers that they are not forgotten.

“Our federal workers are the backbone of so many essential services, and they deserve our respect, gratitude, and fair compensation,” said Rep. Sykes. “No one should have to work without pay. I want these dedicated public servants to know that I see them, I value them, and I am fighting in Washington to get this government back open and ensure they’re paid for their critical work.”

Rep. Sykes is continuing to be a vocal advocate for federal employees through the shutdown. She is urging congressional leadership to reach a bipartisan solution that funds the government and protects workers from financial hardship. Rep. Sykes also reaffirmed her commitment to passing legislation that ensures federal workers receive back pay as soon as the government reopens and to preventing future shutdowns that put livelihoods and public safety at risk.

The federal government entered a shutdown on Wednesday, October 1, affecting thousands of federal employees across Ohio and nationwide. TSA agents, air traffic controllers, and other federal workers are required to continue working without pay until the government is funded.
