Akron police and public safety departments receive nearly $175,000
The Akron Police Department and the Summit County Department of Public Safety will receive $174,104 in federal funding, Rep. Emilia Sykes' office announced Aug. 11.
The award will be given through the U.S. Department of Justice's Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program, according to a news release from Sykes' office.
It will aid the police department in closing equipment gaps across many of its divisions, including community relations, services, SWAT, patrol, the detective bureau and the crime scene unit, the release said.
Some of the funding will also support the police department's new Strategic Equipment for Community Understanding, Response and Enforcement program, the release said, which works to improve operational efficiency across bureaus.
The portion of the award going to the public safety department will be used for staff training, including having personnel attend the Alumni Professional Exchange Continuing Education Workshop, the National Forum on Criminal Justice and the Center for Homeland Security and Defense Continuing Education Workshop.
The award covers a project period from Oct. 1, 2024, through Sept. 30, 2028.
