Sykes, MAPS host Girls in STEAM ‘Pilot Her Future’ event
NORTH CANTON — Last week, U.S. Rep. Emilia Sykes (D-District 13), in partnership with the MAPS Air Museum, hosted a Girls in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) event titled “Pilot Her Future.” Girls from Ohio’s 13th Congressional District had the opportunity to learn about career opportunities in aviation and other STEAM fields.
“Pilot Her Future is an event that offers young women a unique opportunity to step into the world of aviation,” said Sykes at the event. “Despite the progress that women have made in the aviation industry, they remain significantly underrepresented. That is why today’s event is so important — it gives young women a chance to see what is possible for their future careers. I’m committed to opening doors for young women to explore careers in STEAM. Whether through increased access to education or legislation that ensures equity in the workplace, we must keep pushing forward to break barriers and create pathways for success.”
According to officials, “Pilot Her Future” provides a space for girls to hear and learn directly from female aviation professionals about the importance of STEAM in aviation as well as how women have contributed to advancements in aviation.
“Historically, women have been underserved in many technical careers and engineering fields. In recent years, however, this trend has started to change,” said retired U.S. Army Col. Reed Kimball, director of education, simulator lead at MAPS Air Museum. “By hosting this event for young women, we hope to continue to foster an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics careers for the next generation of women pioneers and to continue to break down some of the still existing barriers to their success.”
The Girls in STEAM initiative, presented by Sykes, aims to enlighten and inspire girls and young women to pursue professions in STEAM to solve real-world problems and improve communities. The program is open to girls in Ohio’s 13th Congressional District.
