Rep. Sykes Hosts “Call With Your Congresswoman” To Discuss Lowering Housing Costs
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Yesterday, U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) hosted a “Call With Your Congresswoman” to discuss her work to lower the cost of housing for people in Ohio’s 13th Congressional District. Rep. Sykes was joined by special guest Summit County Fiscal Officer Kristen Scalise.
“It was a pleasure to partner with my friend and colleague Fiscal Officer Scalise on my latest Call With Your Congresswoman. I know the high cost of living is top of mind for people across Ohio’s 13th Congressional District, and for many, housing is their largest expense every month. In Congress, I’m delivering on my promise to lower everyday costs by supporting bipartisan legislation like the SALT Deductibility Act, which would provide critical property tax relief at a time when Ohioans need it the most,” said Rep. Sykes. “I’ll keep working to make housing more affordable and to put more of your hard-earned dollars back into your pocket.”
“I’d like to thank Congresswoman Sykes for the opportunity to connect with residents during last night’s ‘Call With Your Congresswoman.’ Property taxes are a major concern for our Summit County Residents, especially those who are on a fixed income. I, along with my staff, remain dedicated to helping everyone to take advantage of the numerous programs offered by my office to assist with paying your real estate taxes. I encourage residents/constituents to reach out to my office so we may assist you with finding programs that suit individual needs as a homeowner and taxpayer,” said Fiscal Officer Scalise.
During the telephone town hall, Rep. Sykes discussed her work to make housing more affordable for all. Rep. Sykes is a co-sponsor of the SALT Deductibility Act, bipartisan legislation which would provide much-needed property tax relief to Northeast Ohioans by fully restoring the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction. The Trump Tax Hike bill in 2017 capped the SALT deduction at $10,000, forcing more Americans to pay federal tax on state and local property and income taxes. Eliminating the cap on SALT deductions will put more money back into people’s pockets.
Summit County Fiscal Officer Kristen Scalise provided resources for upcoming changes in property valuations, including an overview of the state mandated reappraisal process of setting value, how to file a complaint with the Board of Revision, and other tax payment assistance programs available to residents.
