Rep. Sykes Hosts Naturalization Ceremony in Akron

39 New American Citizens Take Oath of Allegiance and Complete Their Paths to Citizenship

AKRON, OH — Today, U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) hosted a naturalization ceremony at the Akron-Summit County Public Library, where 40 naturalized American citizens took the Oath of Allegiance and completed their path to citizenship. Judge John. R. Adams of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio presided over the proceeding and Candice Gage, Managing Attorney at the International Institute of Akron, was the keynote speaker.

“Ohio’s 13th District has long been shaped by the contributions of immigrants. Immigrants from all over helped build the foundation of the district's economy and community. They brought with them the values of resilience, ambition, and dedication that are now integral to the very identity of this region,” said Rep. Sykes. “Congratulations to America’s newest citizens on this monumental achievement. I wish them the best of luck as they embark on this new journey. I am proud to now call them my fellow citizens, and I look forward to serving them, and everyone in Ohio’s 13th Congressional District, in the years ahead.”

To become a U.S. citizen, these individuals had to comply with certain requirements including English language proficiency, proof of residency, knowledge of U.S. history, moral character, and other requirements.
