Rep. Sykes: I Won’t Let Republican Dysfunction Stop Me From Working For People In Ohio’s 13th Congressional District

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Emilia Sykes (OH-13) issued a statement after House Republicans recessed for the weekend despite again failing to elect a Speaker of the House. The House of Representatives has now been without a House Speaker for over two weeks, grinding Congress to a halt.

“The people of Ohio’s 13th  Congressional District are tired of the divisive, partisan politics. While my Republican colleagues continue to fight amongst each other, I’m focusing on the real issues my constituents sent me here to address by introducing legislation like my Lower Your Taxes Act to lower costs and put more hard-earned money back into your pockets,” said Rep. Sykes. “It’s completely unacceptable that Republican dysfunction has paralyzed Congress at a time when we should be providing Israel with the resources it needs to defeat Hamas, reaching a spending agreement so we can keep the government open and critical services running for Northeast Ohioans, lowering costs for everyday Americans, and keeping our communities safe. The only path forward is a bipartisan one — I urge my colleagues across the aisle to join Democrats in ending this chaos by putting people over politics. Let’s come together and get back to work.”

As House Republicans squabbled over politics this week, Rep. Sykes introduced the Lower Your Taxes Act to lower costs for working people and families by expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC). This legislation would pay for those expansions by making greedy corporations pay their fair share in taxes.
