REP. SYKES ISSUES RESPONSE TO THE STATE OF THE UNION
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Representative Emilia Strong Sykes (OH-13) issued the below statement following yesterday’s State of The Union Address by President Joseph R. Biden, Jr.:
“Yesterday, President Biden delivered an inspirational and powerful message of unity reemphasizing the strength of our nation. President Biden laid out a bipartisan economic agenda, calling for Democrats and Republicans to work together to continue building an economy that uplifts all Americans, creates good-paying jobs, and amplifies our competitiveness around the world,” said Rep. Sykes. “The President made it clear we can continue to invest in America in a fiscally responsible way that reduces the deficit without cutting Social Security or Medicare. His message focused on areas where members of both parties can unite and make progress for the American people. Intel’s historic investment will create more than 10,000 new, good-paying jobs in Ohio, and position us as a long-term producer of semiconductors essential to U.S. economic competitiveness and our national security. This is a testament to the commitment to investing in hardworking Americans too frequently forgotten.”
Sykes continued: “I also applaud President Biden’s commitment to improve public safety and transparency in our nation so that all Americans can come home safely. I am optimistic the presence of families impacted by police violence, like my guest Ms. Pamela Walker — mother of Jayland Walker, killed by police in Akron last year — will center the humanity of the issue of police reform and public safety. I am hopeful my colleagues on the other side of the aisle understand the urgency of this moment and commit to coming to the table to find real solutions to promote public safety, transparency, and accountability. Last night, the President reminded us that America’s story is one of progress, resilience, and opportunity for all. It is our collective commitment to this democracy that makes it all possible. The state of our Union is strong.”
