Rep. Sykes Issues Statement on Supreme Court Decision on LGBTQ+ Rights
WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, U.S. Representative Emilia Strong Sykes (OH-13) issued the following statement on the Supreme Court’s ruling in Creative LLC v. Elenis:
“Recent rulings have cast a shadow over the future of equality and justice for generations to come. By restricting LGBTQ+ protections, repealing affirmative action, and stripping away a woman’s right to bodily autonomy, the Supreme Court has undermined the very fabric of our nation's progress against discrimination. Today’s decision sends a chilling message to the LGBTQ+ community, who may now question their worth, their place in society, and their right to live authentically,” said Rep. Sykes. “Despite this disappointing decision, I remain committed to the fight for equality, ensuring that the principles of justice and fairness prevail over prejudice and discrimination. The fight for equality is not a transient pursuit; it is an enduring battle, one that we must fight for the sake of our present and future generations.”
Rep. Sykes is an original co-sponsor of the Equality Act and a member of the Equality Caucus, which works toward the extension of equal rights, the repeal of discriminatory laws, the elimination of hate-motivated violence, and the improved health and well-being for all regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, or sex characteristics.
