Rep. Sykes Launches Girls In S.T.E.A.M. Initiative, Announces First Event — “Beyond The Stars”
AKRON, OH — Today, U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) launched her Girls in S.T.E.A.M. initiative, which aims to enlighten and inspire girls and young women in Ohio’s 13th Congressional District to pursue professions in science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math to solve real-world problems which will improve our communities.
Rep. Sykes will host the first event of this year-round initiative on October 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the William McKinley Museum in Canton. The theme “Beyond the Stars” will encourage girls to broaden their horizon to the field of space exploration with a focus on the upcoming solar eclipse in April 2024, where Northeast Ohio will lie within the path of totality for nearly four minutes of total darkness. Students will learn about the wonders of space through a planetarium show, museum tour, and panel discussion with guests from the NASA Glenn Research Center.
“As a member of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, one of my personal priorities is increasing diversity and representation in our S.T.E.A.M. workforce. When we empower girls to explore science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math, we pave the way for innovation, diversity, and a brighter future for us all. That’s why I’m proud to announce my Girls in S.T.E.A.M. initiative, to unlock the limitless potential of young girls and women in Ohio’s 13th Congressional District so that they can become the scientists, engineers, doctors, and software developers of the future,” said Rep. Sykes.
