Rep. Sykes Leads Members Of Ohio Delegation Letter Urging Ohio To Join IRS Direct File Program
Direct File would make filing taxes easier, less expensive for people in Ohio’s 13th Congressional District
WASHINGTON, D.C. — This week, U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) led Ohio delegation members Reps. Joyce Beatty (OH-03), Shontel Brown (OH-11), and Greg Landsman (OH-01) in a letter urging the DeWine administration to work with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), U.S. Department of Treasury, and the Ohio General Assembly to take the necessary steps for Ohio to join the IRS Direct File program as soon as possible.
Direct File is a free tax filing tool operated by the Department of Treasury and the IRS. All 50 states are able to partner with the IRS to provide Direct File as an option to their residents for 2025. Ohio is not currently a member of this program.
“Ohio taxpayers deserve access to this free and simple filing option. For many, the tax filing season can be time consuming, expensive, and confusing, even though most taxpayers have relatively simple returns. The IRS aims to enhance the tax filing experience by offering Direct File as an additional option for taxpayers to utilize, alongside existing free filing options like Free File, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly program. Ohioans should have the same opportunity to access Direct File as they do any other taxpayer assistance program offered by the IRS,” wrote the Ohio delegation members.
