Rep. Sykes Nominates 18 Students to United States Military Service Academies

AKRON, OH — Today, U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) announced the newest class of service academy nominations for Ohio’s 13th Congressional District. Eighteen students from across the district have received nominations to attend one of the United States service academies, including the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, as part of the Class of 2029.

“This program is a prestigious opportunity for those in Ohio’s 13th Congressional District that have an interest in a career in military service. It’s an honor to nominate some of the best and brightest in our community to promote democracy, defend our nation’s freedoms, and keep our country safe,” said Rep. Sykes. “I’ve long called Ohio’s 13th Congressional District the Birthplace of Champions, and these nominees will proudly continue this long-standing legacy of our community.”

The honor of attending a Military Service Academy comes with the obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation. Now that these applicants have received a nomination from Rep. Sykes, they are eligible for an appointment, or acceptance, into the respective military service academy. In the coming months, the academies will offer some students an appointment, and those students will have until May 1 to accept or decline the appointment. A nomination does not guarantee an appointment.

As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Rep. Sykes may nominate applicants who legally reside within the boundaries of Ohio’s 13th Congressional District.
