Rep. Sykes Presents $250,000 Check To Massillon For Reservoir Park Restoration Project
MASSILLON, OH — Today, U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) presented a $250,000 ceremonial check to the City of Massillon for the Reservoir Park Restoration Project.
“This project will help to restore deteriorating infrastructure and will help to safeguard a healthier environment for both locals and wildlife,” said Rep. Sykes. “I will keep working to secure federal funding to improve the lives of people in Ohio’s 13th Congressional District through projects that strengthen our community and ensure a healthy, safe environment.”
“This funding will allow the City of Massillon to address numerous environmental and safety concerns along the Reservoir’s walking path, and will enhance the park’s biodiversity, ecosystem sustainability, and aesthetic appeal. Reservoir Park is the most used park in our system and is enjoyed by people of all ages. We thank Congresswoman Sykes for submitting the Reservoir Park Restoration Project for Community Project Funding and for her continued support for the communities in her district,” said Massillon Mayor Jamie Slutz.
The Reservoir Park Restoration Project addresses urgent environmental challenges and aging infrastructure in Massillon’s Reservoir Park. Following a 2017 mandate from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources that required removal of a dam, a former pond was transformed into a stream, which resulted in sedimentation issues and the loss of critical aquatic habitat. The project will restore ecological balance and improve infrastructure through construction of a 40–45 acre pond, stabilization of approximately 1,800 feet of streambank, and renovations to the existing pumphouse. It also includes long-term measures to prevent future environmental degradation.
These improvements will reduce erosion and flooding, enhance water quality and wildlife habitat, and improve safety along nearby walking paths. By restoring the pond and upgrading park amenities, the project will strengthen recreational opportunities and quality of life for residents.
The $250,000 for the Massillon Reservoir Park Restoration Project is one of 15 Community Funding Projects totaling more than $12 million Rep. Sykes secured in the Fiscal Year 2026 federal budget. The other projects included in this funding can be found here.
