Rep. Sykes Recognized For Community Contributions At Summit County Juvenile Court Banner Unveiling
AKRON, OH — Today, U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) was recognized for her contributions to the community in a banner unveiling ceremony by the Summit County Juvenile Court.
“Serving the people of Ohio’s 13th Congressional District is the privilege of a lifetime. It's an honor to be recognized by the Summit County Juvenile Justice Court and Judge Linda Teodosio for this banner alongside my wonderful, loving parents Vernon and Barbara Sykes,” said Rep. Sykes. “I’ve always said, though it was my name on the ballot, we’re all going to Congress. Similarly, though my name may be on this banner, this is only because of the work we have accomplished together as a community. I’ll continue working every day to improve the lives of the people I have been entrusted to represent.”
Rep. Sykes was recognized alongside her parents, Akron School Board Member Barbara Sykes and State Senator Dr. Vernon Sykes. The banner is part of the Juvenile Court’s ongoing observance of Black History and Women’s History Months in February and March, respectively.
Rep. Sykes is the first Black woman to serve the 13th Congressional District. Rep. Sykes joins past banner honorees Dorothy Jackson, Judge Carla Moore, Sojourner Truth, and Supreme Court Justice Maureen O’Connor. The banner will be displayed for a year at the new main entrance to the Juvenile Court Justice Center.
