Rep. Sykes Statement on the Anniversary of the Social Security Act

AKRON, OH — U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) issued a statement recognizing the 88th Anniversary of the signing of the Social Security Act:

“On its 88th Anniversary, I’m proud to recognize the Social Security Act as the most effective anti-poverty program in America, providing millions with comprehensive retirement, disability, and survivors benefits,” said Rep. Sykes. “Social Security guarantees Ohio seniors can retire with security and dignity, ensuring they can pay rent, purchase groceries, and fill their prescriptions. This program provides benefits for children, seniors, veterans, small business owners, and more than 106,000 families in Ohio’s 13th Congressional District. While some of my colleagues on the other side of the aisle have proposed devastating cuts to this program, I strongly oppose cutting benefits for Americans, especially those in Ohio’s 13th Congressional District, who rely on Social Security. That is why I’m championing meaningful legislative action to uplift our seniors and their families. I will always fight for commonsense solutions to strengthen and expand Social Security for current and future generations.

Rep. Sykes is a cosponsor of H.R. 4583, the Social Security 2100 Act, which would improve cost-of-living adjustments, increase benefits for all Social Security beneficiaries, repeal provisions that penalize public servants, cut taxes for 23 million beneficiaries, and extend the solvency of Social Security for decades to come.

Additionally, Rep. Sykes is a cosponsor of H.R. 82, the Social Security Fairness Act, which would repeal provisions that reduce Social Security benefits for over 150,000 Ohio first responders, teachers, and public servants who receive other benefits like a state or local government pension.

More than 106,000 households in Ohio’s 13th Congressional District rely on Social Security.
