Working for You in Committee: Scientific Publishing

Congresswoman Sykes participated in a Science, Space and Technology Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight hearing titled, “The State of Scientific Publishing: Assessing Trends, Emerging Issues, and Policy Considerations." Congresswoman Sykes is the Ranking Member of this subcommittee.  This hearing explored the evolving landscape of scientific publishing, highlighting key issues such as open access policies, the integrity of peer review, conflict-of-interest standards, data transparency, and research reproducibility. It also addressed growing concerns around predatory journals, paper mills, and the “publish or perish” culture that can prioritize quantity over quality. The discussion also examined how emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, are shaping the future of scientific research. Particular focus was given to their impact on research quality, scientific integrity, misconduct risks, and the continued pursuit of rigorous, gold-standard science.
