The funding will be used to design and rebuild 22,000 yards of terminal apron pavement. The project will focus on the airport’s main runway, adjoining taxiways and all connected drainage and lighting infrastructure.

Safer roadways are another major priority.

“At its core, this project is about maintaining a safe, reliable and forward-looking airport that serves both today’s users and tomorrow’s aviation opportunities. Reconstructing the apron directly improves aircraft safety, reduces the risk of pavement-related incidents, and enhances overall operational reliability for both training and transient activity,” said KSU Airport Manager Dave Poluga.

Rep. Emilia Sykes, D-Ohio-13, said the project gives students a chance to further their education.

“Kent State University is doing important work training our next generation of pilots and aerospace and aeronautical engineers,” said Sykes. "This grant will give the Kent State University Airport the funds it needs to maintain safe runways, giving students the chance to improve upon their education. Keeping our airports safe and operational year-round is critical to Northeast Ohio’s economy and public safety."
