Rep. Sykes Again Votes to Reassert Congressional Authority on Iran War Powers

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) released the following statement after once again voting in favor of a war powers resolution to remove U.S. forces from hostilities in Iran that have not been authorized by Congress. The resolution did not pass the House.

As tensions remain high, diplomatic efforts have stalled, casualties continue to rise, and concerns are mounting over the lack of a clear strategy from the administration.

“Congress, not the president alone, has the power to declare war, and Republicans in Congress are choosing to look the other way while the White House drags us deeper into this conflict. I voted again to stop that,” said Rep. Sykes. “Vice President Vance’s negotiations have failed, at least 13 American servicemembers have been killed and many more injured, and President Trump still has no clear exit strategy. That is unacceptable.

“On top of that, the president’s reckless and disgusting comments about wiping out Iran’s civilization are dangerous and only inflame tensions at a moment when we should be working to de-escalate. Our troops deserve a mission and a plan, not rhetoric that puts them at greater risk.

“The American people deserve a say before we are pulled further into another war. Instead, families back home are paying the price, with gas prices rising and costs going up across the board. We should be focused on lowering costs and keeping Americans safe, not writing a blank check for another endless conflict.”

Rep. Sykes will continue pushing for accountability, supporting U.S. servicemembers and their families, and fighting to ensure Congress fulfills its constitutional responsibility on matters of war and peace.
