CANTON, OH — Today, U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) announced the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded an FY23 SMART grant of $1,975,00 to the Stark Regional Transit Authority (SARTA). SARTA will utilize this grant to equip their transit vehicles with automated driver assistance systems to improve driver safety and prevent collisions.
“I’m excited to announce SARTA has received a grant for more than $1.9 million made possible by the historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law,” said Rep. Sykes. “This grant will allow SARTA to equip their buses with state-of-the-art automated driver systems to improve road safety and prevent collisions, ensuring people in Ohio’s 13th Congressional District can get to their destinations safely. Once again, SARTA is leading the way in adopting cutting-edge technology to improve our public transit systems.”
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) established the Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) discretionary grant program with $100 million appropriated annually for fiscal years (FY) 2022-2026. The SMART program was established to provide grants to eligible public sector agencies focused on advanced smart community technologies and systems in order to improve transportation efficiency and safety.
