Rep. Sykes Celebrates 125th Anniversary Of Akron-Based Goodyear
AKRON, OH — U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) issued a statement today celebrating the 125th anniversary of the founding of Akron-based Goodyear Tires & Rubber Co.:
“Goodyear’s cutting-edge innovations in the tire and rubber industry originally put Ohio’s 13th Congressional District on the map as the ‘Rubber Capital of the World.’ 125 years later, Goodyear continues to be a source of pride for its founding city of Akron,” said Rep. Sykes. “From the company’s humble beginnings in 1898 with 13 workers producing bicycle and carriage tires, Goodyear has grown to one of the biggest tire companies in the world, employing 72,000 people worldwide and becoming one of the largest employers in our district. For people in Akron, Goodyear is more than just a company — it’s a symbol of our community’s hard work, determination, and resilience. I wish Goodyear many more years of growth and valuable service to the people of Ohio’s 13th District.”
Rep. Sykes serves as a co-chair of the Congressional Tire Caucus in the 118thCongress. On June 30, 2023, she introduced a bipartisan resolution recognizing the week of June 26 through July 2, 2023, as "National Tire Safety Week," to educate American motorists about the importance of proper tire care and maintenance. In July 2023, she joined other members of the Northeast Ohio House Delegation in introducing a bipartisan amendment to H.R. 2670, the Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), to support domestic natural rubber production. The amendment calls upon the Department of Defense to take all appropriate action to lessen our military’s dependence on adversarial nations for strategically critical materials, including natural rubber, a key industry in Northeast Ohio.
