Rep. Sykes Celebrates Girl Scouts Of North East Ohio Groundbreaking On STEM Center Of Excellence

PENINSULA, OH — Last week, U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) celebrated the groundbreaking of Girl Scouts of North East Ohio’s (GSNEO) Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Center of Excellence. The STEM Center is being built at Camp Ledgewood located in Peninsula within the boundaries of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

“I’m proud to have partnered with the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio to request Community Project Funding so more children in Ohio’s 13th Congressional District can get involved in STEM. This brand-new STEM Center of Excellence will be instrumental in ensuring all children in Northeast Ohio, especially girls, can contribute to the scientific and technological innovations of the future,” said Rep. Sykes. “I look forward to seeing how this center will continue to grow and thrive for years to come.”

Through the Community Project Funding process for Fiscal Year 2024, Rep. Sykes requested federal funding on behalf of GSNEO to supplement state, local, and private funding for continued construction and development of the STEM Center of Excellence. The request is actively under consideration by the House Committee on Appropriations for the Fiscal Year 2024 appropriations process and would bring $850,000 to Summit County. While the funding process is currently ongoing, working with local leaders in the district is an important part in understanding the need for these resources and how Rep. Sykes can provide support. The STEM Center will include an 8,000 square foot building and will be integrated with the outdoors in this beautiful 350-acre camp. It will house a wet lab; workshop space, including tools needed for prototyping and invention; technology space; podcast booth; observatory; weather station; and more. Outside, the building will include other immersive experiences, including a meadow with a honeybee exhibit, an outdoor pavilion with bat houses, a rain garden, and an outdoor classroom.
