Rep. Sykes Joins Families USA Health Action Conference To Discuss Birth Outcomes
AKRON, OH — Today, U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) participated on a panel alongside U.S. Representative Delia Ramirez (IL-3) for the Families USA Health Action Conference titled, “The Next Generation of Leaders in Health Policy and Advocacy.” Rep. Sykes spoke about her key health priorities, including her work to improve Black maternal health outcomes by co-sponsoring the Momnibus Act to reduce infant and maternal mortality throughout the country.
“Every mom deserves to have a safe and healthy pregnancy. But our country is the deadliest place out of any high-income country to give birth, and Ohio in particular has one of the highest rates of infant and maternal mortality in the nation. By addressing critical issues such as maternal healthcare, affordable childcare, paid family leave, and economic empowerment for women, the Momnibus Act will ensure moms and babies have the support and resources they need to live long, healthy lives,” said Rep. Sykes. “There is still much work to be done to address this national public health issue, but as an original co-sponsor of this bill, I am proud to put forward a legislative solution that will work to support mothers and bring an end to the maternal mortality crisis in America.”
During the panel, Rep. Sykes also emphasized the importance of federal legislators who reflect the communities and the people they are serving and offered advice for how health equity advocates can make meaningful change despite polarization in politics
