Rep. Sykes Recognizes Labor Day And The Contributions Of American Workers

AKRON, OH— This Labor Day, U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) celebrates the many contributions American workers have made to strengthen our nation’s economy and society.

“On Labor Day, our nation celebrates the labor movement and honors the contributions of the hardworking Americans who are the backbone of our county and economy. From establishing the 8-hour workday to raising wages and securing health and safety standard, unions have played a critical role in building the middle class,” said Rep. Sykes.

 “As workers across America, including right here in Ohio’s 13th Congressional District, continue the fight to improve wages and working conditions, I’m proud to stand in solidarity with workers and advocate for higher pay, better benefits, and safer working conditions by supporting the Richard L. Trumka Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act. This bill will help level the playing field for workers by ensuring every worker has a free and fair choice to join a union.

“Thank you to all the hardworking men and women who show up every day and put in the work for our communities. Happy Labor Day!”

 Rep. Sykes is a member of the Congressional Labor Caucus. In addition to supporting the PRO Act, she is also a co-sponsor of several other pro-labor bills to support workers, including:

· The Paycheck Fairness Act to combat wage discrimination and ensure equal pay for equal work;

· The Tax Fairness for Workers Act to make the tax code fairer by allowing workers to deduct union dues and work-related expenses; and

· The No Tax Breaks for Union Busting Act that would deny American taxpayer subsidies for corporate activity intended to discourage workers from exercising their legally protected right to unionize.

In March 2023, Rep. Sykes hosted a roundtable with local labor leaders from across the district to discuss creating good-paying union jobs, strengthening workforce development programs, and other ways to support working people and families in Ohio’s 13th District.
