Rep. Sykes Votes Against Partisan Bill That Does Nothing To Protect Our Communities Or Secure The Border
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) voted against H.R. 5283 and released the following statement:
“We can all agree that our immigration system is broken and does not meet the needs of immigrants, asylum seekers, businesses, or our communities. This problem requires real solutions – not partisan, divisive legislation like H.R. 5283 that does nothing to fix our immigration system or protect our communities. I will continue working towards productive, bipartisan efforts to secure our borders, prevent dangerous drugs and weapons from entering our country, keep children and families together, and strengthen our economy,” said Rep. Sykes.
H.R. 5283 would prohibit the use of Federal funds to provide temporary shelter to certain noncitizens, including migrants seeking asylum, on Federal lands falling under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, or the Forest Service. This legislation significantly restricts the ability of the Department of the Interior and the Department of Agriculture to make decisions regarding the appropriate uses of their lands and resources, even in emergency or other situations.
