Social Security Fairness Act Signed into Law by President Biden
Rep. Sykes Voted to Pass the Legislation out of the House with Overwhelming Bipartisan Support
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) applauded President Joe Biden for signing the Social Security Fairness Act into law. The Social Security Fairness Act eliminates the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO) from the Social Security Act. Before the law’s signing, public service employees were unable to receive their full Social Security benefits if they also received other forms of retirement benefits, such as a pension. In November, Rep. Sykes voted in favor of the bipartisan Social Security Fairness Act, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives with an overwhelming bipartisan majority before being passed by the U.S. Senate in December.
“This important law not only provides relief to thousands of my constituents who are frustrated they couldn’t receive their full Social Security benefits – it demonstrates what Congress is capable of when we work together in bipartisan fashion,” said Rep. Sykes. “There’s no good reason why teachers, firefighters, and other public service employees who have earned their retirement benefits should not receive them.”
Rep. Sykes has worked in Congress to protect and expand Social Security benefits for Ohio’s 13th Congressional District.
