Rep. Sykes Announces Over $1.7M Awarded To Stark State College To Expand Access To Training, Skill Development For In-Demand Industries

NORTH CANTON, OH — Today, U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) announced the U.S. Department of Labor has awarded a Strengthening Community Colleges Training grant of $1,749,974 to Stark State College. Stark State will use this grant to prepare students for jobs that pay family-sustaining wages and offer career development opportunities based on the Good Jobs Principles developed by the Departments of Labor and Commerce in 2022. Grantees will work with industry stakeholders to identify the workforce needs of multiple employers within a selected industry in the labor market area.

“I’m pleased to announce Stark State College has received a grant of more than $1.7 million to expand access to job training programs, thereby equipping students with the skills they need to secure good-paying jobs in growing industries throughout Ohio’s 13th District,” said Rep. Sykes. “This grant will boost our local economy by connecting employers to skilled workers, all while expanding opportunities for students to succeed in today’s workforce.”

The U.S. Department of Labor announced on August 17, 2023, the availability of $65 million to increase community colleges’ ability to provide equitable access to training to meet employers’ and workers’ skill development needs for in-demand industries. In the fourth round of funding, the Strengthening Community Colleges Training Grants will concentrate on the capacity of community colleges to address identified equity gaps to increase access to educational and economic opportunities for dislocated workers and new entrants to the workforce, as well as employed workers seeking to advance in their careers, particularly for individuals from historically underserved communities.
