Rep. Sykes Celebrates Glendale Steps Being Added To The National Register Of Historic Places
AKRON, OH — This week, U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) presented volunteer-led non-profit organization Progress Through Preservation of Greater Akron (PTP) with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for their work to add Akron’s Glendale Steps to the National Register of Historic Places.
“Progress Through Preservation’s work perfectly reflects the spirit of Akron and everyone – myself included – who is proud to call this city home,” said Rep. Sykes. “The Glendale Steps have long been a major point and pride and identity in the West Hill neighborhood. Thanks to PTP’s work to gain this national designation, more people from all over the country will have the opportunity not only to visit the Glendale steps and appreciate their history, but to learn more about the legacy of our entire city.”
The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation's historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America's historic and archeological resources. Now that the steps are on the national register, PTP will be able to apply for federal grants to fix up and maintain the site through the Ohio Historic Preservation Office.
