Rep. Sykes Statement On Israel Supplemental Security Legislation
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) voted against H.R. 7217, legislation that delays Congress’ ability to help Israel defend itself and fails to include funding for humanitarian assistance for the people of Gaza.
“Once again, the House Majority is playing political games with our national security. By refusing to pass a bipartisan national security agreement that would secure the border, support the people of Israel, and provide humanitarian assistance to people directly impacted by Hamas’ terror attack, they are putting innocent civilians, our allies, and our nation’s safety at risk,” said Rep. Sykes. “I’ll continue to stand with Israel and its right to exist. I support a comprehensive approach that fully addresses our national security challenges both at home and abroad in order to keep the people of Ohio’s 13th Congressional District safe.”
H.R 7217 provides $17.6 billion for the Departments of State and Defense to respond to attacks in Israel. In October, President Biden requested $14.3 billion for this purpose. This bill provides no funding for Ukraine to defend itself against Putin’s aggression, the Indo-Pacific, humanitarian assistance for Palestinian civilians, or border security that were included in the President’s security supplemental request and are the subject of bipartisan negotiations.
